Outstanding assemblage of rare coastal flora. Important estuarine ecosystem including tidal mudflat and salt marsh. Largest continuous mudflat in Essex. Geomorphological interest.

International ornithological importance, especially for over-wintering brent geese (2% of world population) and knot. Gull roost of c.30,000 off Sales Point.

National Nature Reserve. SPA and Ramsar site (1994). Component part of the Mid-Essex Coast SPA and, the Essex Estuaries candidate SAC.
